Visible even in daylight, people back in 1923 would stop and stare at the first neon signs in the U.S.A. for hours and they dubbed them "liquid fire."  Neon signs were absolutely amazing. These gas-filled, colorful glass tubes bent into various shapes quickly became the lighting signage of choice for multiple businesses. Technically speaking, the greatest cause of neon tube failure is the gradual absorption of neon gas by high voltage ion implantation into the interior glass walls of the tubes which depletes the gas. The actual cause of 80% of neon sign failures is the burnout of the high voltage electrical wires connecting the tubes inside of metal conduits.

In other words, neon signs require a lot of maintenance to be able to continue displaying all of the letters in the name of your business. The whole sign could grow dark as well, meaning customers might actually think you’ve closed, and that’s never a good sign.
